Finally, the time has arrived! After roughly 105 hours in Skyrim I have completed the two main story lines in the game. I still have a few minor cities to visit, but I have also worked and finished a lot of the side quests as well. I will say, surprisingly, just because I have completed the main quests I can see myself going back into Skyrim and working on all the smaller quests I might have missed, and futzing around with the achievements. As of right now I only have 37 or 75 which is a bit surprising considering how much time I spent in the game!
I have tried to play Oblivion a few times in the past, and I couldn't handle it. I
REALLY disliked it, so at first I was a bit wary of Skyrim. After seeing Chibi play through it though, I was more interested but the fact that the world is so open, and expansive I was nervous to start such a large game, especially when I planned to write up a review for it. And as I expected it DID take me quite a while to complete this game, around 5 months. Granted, if you didn't worry about the side quests, or were rushing through things you could probably complete it much more quickly.
Before I get into the real meat and potatoes of this review, I do want to give out a
warning to people that will be fiddling with mods. I had downloaded some basic mods, and then later on added to my list with some (new and improved!) houses, with more places to stash things, and they were visually more appealing. At first I didn't have any issue with the house, but one day I had trouble fast travelling, all I got was a black screen. I can't conclusively say that the issue was the house mod, but once I deleted all of my superfluous mods, the problem was gone. At the mention of mods you might wonder if I used any cheats/hacks during my play through, and I did! I hacked my speed, so I would be faster and also edited my carry load so I could hold more between selling. At the beginning I also fiddled with the height modification, which is QUITE fun! I have never used cheats or anything like this prior to this game, but I knew that this game would be difficult enough, so I did what I felt necessary to make it more bearable and playable for me.
Alright! So, what did I love about this game? The environment is beyond gorgeous. The variation in the climates, cities, buildings, and the skies would continuously blow my mind! I feel like most of the pictures I snapped while playing were of beautiful skies, and the moons. I grew to
really like some of the main characters, which made some choices more difficult than I expected; it felt much more immersive than I expected - for instance, when it came to choosing between the Stormcloaks or the Empire. And I really enjoyed all of the smaller quests that really don't change much of anything as far as the game is concerned, but they were satisfying nonetheless. I played the game as a warrior, essentially, and I enjoyed the combat a lot. I can't really say as far as being a caster, or rogue-like character. Oddly enough, by the end of the game I was the 'head' of a lot of different guilds and you'd think they would conflict somehow, but it didn't appear to be an issue. I don't think that the list of things I like adequately describes the level of enjoyment I got from playing Skyrim though, so please don't let my "negatives" list weigh too heavily, most of them are silly or unimportant.
The first
MAJOR issues I had was the ending to the quest to bring down Alduin. Without going too much into the battle, I will simply say that he was not lootable. And it aggravated the bejeesus out of me! And that happened a lot actually, some key characters that you would kill ended up having nothing more than a common NPC waltzing around. This isn't really a bad point, I actually found it funny, but there are a lot of bugs throughout the game. Some are small, like glitching bears that dance when they're killed - but there also are bigger ones, accidentally attacking an NPC and being unable to finish a quest. (In case this happens to you, you can mod the character to be level 25, and then use a soothing spell, which is what I ended up having to do) After watching Chibi play through Skyrim I realized that taking a companion with you while you're questing usually is more hassle than it's worth (they get in the way of your blade, and die often), so most of the game I played solo, aside from quests where the person was required to tag along. And I suppose the final problem I had was the lack of choices for a decent spouse! I wound up marrying Sorex Vinius from Solitude.
And I suppose that concludes my review, sort of anti-climactic for a five month long wait, no? Honestly the game
IS long, there are a lot of quests, and especially if you're a completionist like me, you'll be hard at work for some time. Having said that, the game is very rewarding, fun, and I found myself really invested in my character, and certain NPC's and their well-being. I've considered playing through once more, perhaps as one of the less liked races, and more than likely as a male, just to change things up a bit. Thank you for your understanding, and patience - I really do appreciate it!
I have gotten quite a few requests for some future games, and I promise I will work on them in due time. I am hoping to finish at least ONE series before I continue onto a new game though, plus I have Tomb Raider to finish on my xbox360.
Sure wish there was a dragon around here to slay....by
